A Heart in a Body in the World

Toward the beginning of her journey, Annabelle spontaneously cuts off her hair. Why does she do this? What does this action represent for her?

Early on, a doctor tells Annabelle, “You must remember that the heart is a muscle, too, and it can get as stressed as the others” (60). The heart symbolizes both emotional and physical well-being. What obstacles does Annabelle face and overcome, both physically and emotionally, throughout the novel?

When Annabelle first starts running, she’s not sure of her motivation. Why do you think Annabelle decides to run across the country? What does the run represent? What does Annabelle achieve or accomplish by completing this journey?
