Nehemia and Celaena are again eating breakfast together in Celaena’s room. Nehemia asks her if her freedom is worth the price and risk of hunting down and killing rebels for the king. Nehemia doesn’t approve of Celaena being King’s Champion and worries that her family will think Celaena’s soul is “rotted.” Nehemia believes that Celaena is in a position of power she’s neglecting because she only follows the king's orders. When Nehemia suggests that Celaena is too focused on earning her freedom, Celaena insists she’s suffered enough to deserve her freedom. Nehemia agrees but reminds her that others are suffering more. She also questions how she can continue to be Celaena’s friend. Celaena confesses that she hasn’t killed anyone but has simply faked their deaths. Nehemia asks about Archer, so Celaena tells her that he has until the end of the month to fake his death and flee the city but that he will give her information about the rebel movement before he leaves.
Celaena then tells Nehemia of her connection with Elena and the events since her arrival at the glass castle. She takes the princess to Elena’s tomb and introduces her to Mort. Inside the tomb, Nehemia reads some of the many Wyrdmarks to Celaena.
