Rae is the female protagonist of Her Soul to Take and a dynamic character who changes throughout the novel. She is 21 and moves back to Abelaum, her childhood home, to finish her last year of college. Rae is ambitious and inquisitive but also skeptical. She wants to run her paranormal vlog full-time, but she currently does not have enough views or make enough money to do that. She hopes to explore the paranormal activity in Abelaum to gain more followers for her vlog, though she does not believe that the rumors are based in fact.
Because she is skeptical of the town’s occult legends, Rae initially rationalizes some of the monstrous things she sees. It is only when she realizes that Leon is a demon that she has to acknowledge that Abelaum’s legends are true. Rae’s motivations shift at this point from attempting to make her vlog go viral to just trying to survive, as she soon learns that she is the target of the Libiri cult, which is determined to sacrifice her soul to its god.
