Morrigan Crow is the 12-year-old protagonist of Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow. Morrigan starts out 11, placing her at the age when a Republic child becomes an apprentice. She does not expect any bids on Bid Day because she is considered a cursed child, doomed to die within a year. However, she receives two genuine bids—from Mr. Jones (Ezra Squall) and Jupiter North. Morrigan chooses Jupiter and the Wundrous Society, a decision which takes her to the Free State in Nevermoor.
Having been emotionally abused and neglected by her family, Morrigan’s core trait is insecurity. She believes what her father Corvus Crow and their town teach her—that her status as a cursed child makes her undeserving of good things. This belief carries over to her time at Jupiter’s Hotel Deucalion. Though Morrigan looks forward to completing the four Wundrous Trials and belonging to the Wundrous Society, she anticipates failure. She expects to be isolated from her newfound family, from Jupiter, Fenestra (or Fen), and Hawthorne Swift in particular. Overall, she is a dynamic character who changes and grows. Not only does Morrigan overcome the trials, but her self-doubt. The novel ends with her facing Squall, the infamous Wundersmith, as well as accepting her own Wundersmith potential and position in her new family.
